When they started talking about war and peace, specifically in Afghanistan, Ryan looked like a toddler trying to cross the Hindu Kush. He stammered. He vanished into his syntax. He gave Biden the chance to ask him if he preferred that American soldiers carry the fighting in the worst parts of the country rather than Afghan troops, a devastating comeback for which Ryan had no answer. He kept rambling about maintaining the country’s “credibility” until, if you closed your eyes, he started to sound like Robert McNamara in 1965.

Chilling. For TUMBLRs who may not get that McNamara reference…

In 1965, in response to stepped up military activity by the Viet Cong in South Vietnam and their North Vietnamese allies, the U.S. began bombing North Vietnam, deployed large military forces and entered into combat in South Vietnam. McNamara’s plan, supported by requests from top U.S. military commanders in Vietnam, led to the commitment of 485,000 troops by the end of 1967 and almost 535,000 by June 30, 1968.

The casualty lists mounted as the number of troops and the intensity of fighting escalated. McNamara put in place a statistical strategy for victory in Vietnam. He concluded that there were a limited number of Viet Cong fighters in Vietnam and that a war of attrition would destroy them. He applied metrics (body counts) to determine how close to success his plan was.

Think Progress Health: Paul Ryan Tells Florida Seniors That Obamacare Includes ‘Death Panels’

Paul Ryan likened a mechanism to control health care spending to “death panels,” during a town hall at the University of Central Florida in Orlando on Saturday.

After listening to Ryan repeatedly call for the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, an elderly man asked the Republican vice presidential nominee about “the death panels.” Rather than dissuading the man from what PolitiFact named 2009′s Lie of the Year, Ryan laughed and responded, “that’s not the word I’d choose to use to describe it. It’s actually called….the Independent Payment Advisory Board”:

QUESTION: We love you Paul. But I’m getting long in years. Will you address the death panels that we’re going to have?

RYAN: The death panels, well! That’s not the word I’d choose to use to describe it. It’s actually called. It’s actually called, so in Medicare, what I refer to as this board of 15 bureaucrats. It’s called the Independent Payment Advisory Board. It sounds fairly innocuous.

The Board, or IPAB — a provision included in the Affordable Care Act — is tasked with making binding recommendations to Congress for lowering health care spending, should Medicare costs exceed a target growth rate. Congress can accept the savings proposal or implement its own ideas through a super majority.

Lyin’ Ryan is at it again.

Why would you lie about your time running an amateur marathon?

kathiek:

Paul Ryan did. By over an hour. Pathological

Massive insecurity?

Ego mania?

Narcissistic Personality Disorder?

Hubris?

No internalized sense of right and wrong?

An internalized sense of right and wrong but no desire to do right?

All of the above?

Just like Snow Snooki, Paul Ryan loves to run, and apparently, he loves to lie too.
Ryan told Hugh Hewitt that he ran a sub 3:00 marathon — ”under three, high twos. I had a two hour and fifty-something,” he said.
Funny thing is that Runner’s World can’t find any record of Ryan’s super-fast marathon running.

“Ryan’s name does not show up in the 1991 race results provided by Grandma’s. Runner’s World checked 11 years of results for Grandma’s Marathon, from 1988 through 1998, and found a finisher in the 1990 race by the name of Paul D. Ryan, 20, of Minneapolis.
Ryan’s middle name is Davis, and he was 20 in 1990. The finishing time listed was 4 hours, 1 minute and 25 seconds.”

Oh what a tangled web we weave…
UPDATE: The Ryan camp has issued a statement (also noted by karen marie in the comments) from Lyin’ Ryan:

“The race was more than 20 years ago, but my brother Tobin—who ran Boston last year—reminds me that he is the owner of the fastest marathon in the family and has never himself ran a sub-three. If I were to do any rounding, it would certainly be to four hours, not three. He gave me a good ribbing over this at dinner tonight.”

This is a traumatic thing — she’s, shall we say, she’s uptight. She is frightened, tight, and so on. And sperm, if deposited in her vagina, are less likely to be able to fertilize. The tubes are spastic.

Right Wing FOXhole Brit Hume stumps Paul Ryan on his own budget.  Ryan claims he hasn’t “run the numbers, ” but even so, we should elect him and THEN they’ll tell us how it all works. Oh, and Ryan also disowns Ayn Rand, formerly his reason for existing.

Four in 10 Americans rate Mitt Romney’s selection of Rep. Paul Ryan to be his running mate as either ‘excellent’ or ‘pretty good,’ while 42% call the choice ‘only fair’ or ‘poor.’ This even division is among the least positive reactions to a vice presidential choice Gallup has recorded in recent elections. Only George H.W. Bush’s selection of Dan Quayle in 1988 generated a higher negative response, although it also generated higher positives.
