See, now that’s your problem right there…
While the RNC was busy trying (and failing) to get together a Celebrity Task Force in Hollywood, something else was going on in Georgia. See if you can figure out which might be a bigger impediment to voter outreach.
Raw Story: Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) has refused through a spokesperson to endorse one town’s first-ever integrated high school prom, saying that he would rather not take sides on the issue. According to Atlanta’s WMAZ Channel 13, politicians from both parties have stated their support for black and white students from Wilcox, Georgia, but Deal declined to join them.
Raw Story spoke to activist Bryan Long of the progressive group Better Georgia, whose group has asked Georgia elected officials “to publicly support the students of Wilcox County who are fighting to end a ‘separate-but-equal’ high school prom.”
“We thought it would be nice if our elected officials would support these students,” said Long. “They’re taking a great stand in their community. We thought that officials all across the state should send a message to the nation that we’ve moved beyond the racial divisions of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.”
He added, “We were surprised to read that the governor’s spokesperson said that he wouldn’t be ‘taking sides’ on this issue. I didn’t know that there were sides to take.”
Of course there are sides to take. There’s the racist side and there’s the non-racist side. It should be a no-brainer — you take the non-racist side. But Deal refuses to do that; whether because he’s a racist himself, because he’s afraid of alienating racist voters, or both is pretty much irrelevant. When the party can’t be counted on to stand up to honest-to-goodness racism — and segregation is blatant racism — then you’re going to have yourself a little trouble convincing minority voters they should vote for you.
If Deal’s not a racist, then he’s a coward. Worse, by saying he’s not going to take sides, he takes sides with the racists by default, since this is conceding — without actually saying it outright — that the segregationists have a valid argument. Racism isn’t something you can “stay out of.” By fleeing from the argument in cowardice, Nathan Deal has chosen his side and that choice does not redound to his glory.
RNC head Reince Priebus should personally fly down to Georgia and kick Deal in the ass — if not as a Republican, then as a Wisconsinite. We don’t have a history of putting up with this shit. At the very least, he ought to realize that the problems the GOP faces aren’t caused by a lack of celebrity endorsements, but by cowardly morons like Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal.

Since 9/11, Muslim American terrorism has killed 33 people, while politically motivated attacks from white supremacists and other right-wing extremists killed more than 200 people, according to a study from the Combating Terrorism Center at the US Military Academy. Since 2010, no one has been killed or injured by Muslim American terrorism. Why do so many Americans have the knee-jerk reaction that “it’s probably the Muslims?Boston Marathon bombings: Breaking the pattern - Opinion - Al Jazeera English (via socialismartnature)

I was in Paris, Texas last week working on a forthcoming story about racial disparities in school discipline when news broke locally that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission had found rampant workplace discrimination against black workers at a Paris pipe factory.
The EEOC report said that the Turner Industries workers had been subjected to “unwelcome racial slurs, comments and intimidation, racial graffiti, nooses in the workplace and other symbols of discrimination.” Anyone who complained, including white employees, was retaliated against by Turner management.
The Dallas Morning News has more:
“I’ve been called colored boy, coon, monkey,” said Dontrail Mathis, 33, a painter’s helper at the plant in Paris who began highlighting racist conditions in December 2006. “When Obama won, they went off. My superiors said ‘If he ain’t white, it ain’t right.’
“I saw nooses, swastikas on the wall,” said Mathis, a father of three. “It was horrible.”
He said that despite the abuse, he still works for the company to help support his family, even though his sister and mother have been threatened.
In all, eight employees had their complaints upheld by the EEOC last month. Their attorneys say they have identified discrimination, harassment and threatening behavior in Turner’s other Texas facilities.
[…]
The abuse in East Texas is nothing new, said the Rev. Peter Johnson, a Dallas civil rights activist who spoke at the news conference.
“East Texas is Mississippi 50 years ago,” he said. “I’ve been doing this 40 years, and it’s frustrating to have to keep fighting discrimination.”
Jason Milligan, who is white, said he was fired from Turner in August after he refused to sign a false affidavit that claimed one of the employees who had complained about the company was stealing at work.
“Not all the employees there were bad,” said Milligan, a 37-year-old father of three. He said that since he was fired, he has had to take a job out of state to support his family.
“As a company, they need to stop living in the 1950s,” he said. “These people all have families, and it doesn’t matter what color they are.
“Enough is enough,” he said.
While in Paris I obtained this note that was left in the lunch pail of a white worker who spoke out against the racism.
And here are some photos of racist graffiti in the bathroom at Turner Industries.
A noose and Confederate flag were prominently displayed at Turner Industries in Paris.
The racial problems in Paris seem to never end. From ugly public lynchings in the late 18th and early 19th century to Shaquanda Cotton to Brandon McClelland to Bobby Yates – and now this. Maybe it’s time that the white establishment in Paris admits that there’s a problem.
Not surprised.
NYPD Officer Blows Whistle On Stop & Frisk, Superior’s Told Him To Target “Male Blacks 14 to 21” (Must Read)
As hearings are under way to investigate New York City’s stop and frisk policy, one police officer is testifying that he was told by superiors to target young black men between the ages of 14 and 21.
Stop and frisk is a method of searching people in which a cop is able to stop someone he or she suspects of a crime, and is able to frisk that individual if they feel that there is some justification. New York City policy made 685,724 stops as part of the policy in 2011 alone. In total, they have made over 5 million stops, and 85 percent of those stopped were black or Latino. 88% were innocent, meaning they were not arrested or given a summons.
Officer Pedro Serrano, in court to testify yesterday, played a covert recording he’d obtained of an interraction with his superior where he was told the race of people to target, though not that he should stop everyone of that race:
Stop “the right people, the right time, the right location,” Deputy Inspector Christopher McCormack is heard saying on the recording.
“He meant blacks and Hispanics,” Officer Pedro Serrano, who made the secret recording, testified Thursday in Manhattan federal court.
“So what am I supposed to do: Stop every black and Hispanic?”Serrano was heard saying on the tape, which was recorded last month at the 40th Precinct in the Bronx.[…]
“I have no problem telling you this,” the inspector said on the tape. “Male blacks. And I told you at roll call, and I have no problem [to] tell you this, male blacks 14 to 21.”
During cross examination, City lawyer Brenda Cooke got Serrano to admit that McCormack never said he wanted Serrano to stop all blacks and Hispanics.
“Those specific words, no,” he told her.
The news about targeting black men tracks with yesterday’s revelations that the NYPD set quotas for arrests. It also explains the fact that, in 2011, NYPD made more stops of young black men than there actually are young black men in the city.
Serrano’s tape and testimony were introduced as evidence in a class-action lawsuit against the NYPD’s controversial stop-and-frisk tactic brought by four black New Yorkers who claim they were targeted because of their race.
Also, the first of several tapes surreptitiously made by Brooklyn cop Adrian Schoolcraft made its debut at the trial. The audio he recorded proved that the police department ‘manipulated’ crime reports to make to it seem like crime decreased in NYC.
After the NYPD found out about Adrian’s incriminating evidence, they broke into his apartment, handcuffed him and locked him in a insane asylum for 6 days against his will to silence him.

Watch the nation’s most prominent conservative political conference go COMPLETELY OFF THE RAILS.
Battle said she was working as a registered nurse in Hurley’s neonatal intensive care unit Oct. 31, when a man walked into the NICU, where Battle was at an infant’s bedside. He reached toward the child, according to the lawsuit filed in Genesee County (Mich.) Circuit Court last month.‘No black nurses’ lawsuit filed against Mich. hospital | The Clarion-Ledger | clarionledger.com (via robot-heart-politics)
“I introduced myself to him. ‘Hi, I’m Tonya and I’m taking care of your baby. Can I see your (identification) band?,’ ” Battle said, referring to the hospital-issued identification used to identify infants’ parents. “And he said in return, ‘And I need to see your supervisor.’ ”
Perplexed by his curtness, she asked for the charge nurse, who spoke separately to the man.
When the charge nurse returned, she told Battle that the father didn’t want African Americans to care for his child. Further, the charge nurse told Battle that he had rolled up his sleeve to expose what appeared to be a swastika.

Although the officers mocked, taunted, and used expletives (including the word ‘nigger’) to distract my father, the City of White Plains refused to indict the officers for misconduct in the fatal shooting. The Attorney General should initiate an investigation into the officers involved as well as the White Plains Police Department.
That’s why I created a petition on SignOn.org to Chief of the Civil Rights Unit of the Southern District of New York David J. Kennedy, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, Assistant Attorney General Thomas E. Perez, and Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr., which says:
We, the undersigned, agree and stand in solidarity with the family of Kenneth Chamberlain Jr. in demanding that Eric Holder do the right thing and indict these officers for violating the civil rights of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. We urge you to also place the White Plains Police Department under federal review.
“White Plains police acted with reckless abandonment and demonstrated a chilling disregard for the quality and sanctity of the life of Mr. Kenneth Chamberlain. Indeed, and at best, the White Plains Police Department violated both their mission statement and their sacred oath of office by facilitating the death of Mr. Chamberlain,” stated Jimmy Bell, Department of Criminal Justice & Sociology, Jackson State University.
